Photo no.20 of 55 photos taken by Captain R.E. Partridge, M.C. of D Company, 1st Battalion Dorset Regiment. These were presented to the Dorset Regimental Museum in February 1965.

  1. Seated, Private Cecil William Hardy, 3/7347 1st Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment, aged 26, died of his wounds on 30th May 1915, body not recovered.

  2. The description of the photo says its “Two of the men in D Company…” The excerpt in the box says it was taken by Capt. R.E Partridge, M.C of D Company, 1st Battalion Dorset Regiment. If this is correct, then there may be a case of mistaken identity for Pvt. Cecil William Hardy, 3/7347. According to the Army numbering system (on the attached link), Pvt. Hard would belong to 3rd Battalion Special Reserve.

    1. This is a little confusing, and I don’t know who is correct here, you or Lee Hall – see previous comment. I can only go on the annotation that my grandfather added to this photo: “Two of the men in D Company writing letters home.” Can anyone explain this discrepancy?
